The 800-mile-long Trans Alaska Pipeline System
(TAPS)
is one of the world's largest pipeline systems.
Starting in Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s
North Slope, TAPS stretches through rugged and beautiful terrain
to Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in North
America. Since pipeline startup in 1977, Alyeska
- TAPS' operator - has
successfully transported more than 15 billion barrels of
oil.

Engineering reduces costs, improves
efficiencies
It’s no secret that Alyeska is on a mission
to provide better, more cost effective
services in light of declining throughput.
One example of how the company is retooling
itself are the recent measures taken by the
engineering department. Story |

Unions preserve jobs, achieve
cost savings
Alaska unions
working together have developed a plan that will allow them to
preserve union jobs on the Trans Alaska Pipeline System while
still delivering significant cost savings to Alyeska Pipeline
Service Company, which operates and maintains the pipeline.

How
often is pigging performed?
Alyeska currently runs a cleaning pig through the 48” mainline
pipeline every 4-7 days to remove wax deposits and water. Inline
inspection (ILI) tools — or smart pigs — are run every three
years to inspect the condition of the pipe.
